It is known as I have a broad interest in music, and I do often listen to older classics. The Beatles was my old favourite, before I gained more of my own taste, I listened to them endlessly when I was 10-11. Here is a list of some of my favourites.
Now, just to warn you, my favourite Beatle is George, and while many of the songs on my list are well known, some of the most famous may not be on my list. I also think Revolver is the best album, so prepare for a bias, compared to other albums.
1. Nowhere man
I love this song, like many on this list, it is not about love (82% of all Beatles songs are about the subject of Love). It has nice lyrics, lovely music and great group singing. It also reminds me of me, I think I am the Nowhere man, sitting in his nowhere land, making all his nowhere plans for nobody. I am lonely.
2. Tomorrow Never knows
Psychedelic man! This is a revolver track and it is pretty damn awesome. Though (like many on this list) it sounds like it was made on the influence drugs, but it sounds bloody awesome. incoherent lyrics, trippy sound and arrangement. It is pretty cool.
3. Please Mr Postman
A cover done right! It has that boyband sound of the Beatle’s earlier songs, and is a cover of a motown piece. Awesome. It has great singing, and it is a charming piece of 60’s.
4. Norwegian Wood
Sitars, what the hell. their first effort with the sitar (A Harrison effort) which would reflect the Indian late 60’s hippy thing they evolved into in later years. It’s a bit of love song, but it takes a bit of a dark turn, and that’s what I like about the song, it’s not that happy. Great song.
5. Yellow Submarine
This one needs no explaining. It is awesome.
6. Don’t pass me by
A Ringo Song (I know, I know), it’s probably my favourite Ringo song, and it is just really good, and I love it. Not that Ringo is the best singer, he is not the best singer, full stop. I like the song, seems like a good one for earlier albums, except it was released on the White Album.
Not an album track, but their best B Side. It has a cool sound and helped The Beatles evolve to their Revolver sound, which is probably why I love it. It’s about either LSD Acid trips, or people moaning about the weather. One of the two, but it is a great song, with a cool sound
8. Only a Northern song
This one is brilliant. Why I have little Harrison songs when he is my favourite, I dunno, but there are tons of other songs I’d love to put in this list, but alas it is a top 10, not a top 40. It’s got a cool sort of electric sound to it, unlike my song…
…This one is awesome. Random, baroque, and about the Police. Our George wasn’t happy about being arrested for Drug’s possession, so penned this song. So filled with hate, I fracking love it! George is a god, it is so sad that he and Lennon were taken away, when they were easily the 2 most talented in the group (I have a bias against Paul and Ringo), I really need to do a Harrison centric list.
10. While my guitar Gently weeps
This song is brilliant. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was ranked #136 on Rolling stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”, #7 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time, and #10 on their list of The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs. In an online poll held by Guitar World magazine in February 2012, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was voted the best of Harrison’s Beatle-era songs. It’s easy to see why, it is just an awesome song, with the emotion and the guitar, and the crying. IT’S HARRISON’S BEST SONG.
So here’s my current top 10, I will compile a list including these, plus the others I wanted to include. Thanks for reading!
